  2. Decades ago, at about the same time the Surgeon General issued the first report on smoking, my mother sent me to the grocery store for something she needed. At the time, I was a teenager with a driver's license and still looking for an excuse to drive.

    As luck would have it that day, I happened to walk into the store behind two middle aged women. One was telling the other about a conversation she had with her daughter. Apparently, her daughter was a smoker, while her son-in-law was not.

    According the woman her daughter said that her son-in-law told her daughter that if she didn't stop smoking, he was going to start spanking her until she quit!

    From what I could gather, although the shocked daughter sought sympathy from her mother, she didn't get it. The mother seemed to be approve of her daughter being spanked. Then, that was the mid-1960s.

    Of course, all these years later, I still have absolutely no idea how the couple resolved their differences. Nevertheless, that particular snippet of life serves to illustrate how different attitudes toward spanking were back then.
